Getting Wonky

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Why is it that when I get my camera out, the sun goes away? ack. At least I have a tall son that is willing to hold up my quilts.

Wonky Squares

This quilt was inspired by Karla Alexander’s book, Stack A New Deck. I had wanted to try it for a long time now, but the perfect fabric eluded me. That is, until I saw Oz by Sanae for Moda Fabrics.

I just stacked a few layers of a Moda layer cake (10″ squares) and started cutting. It totally went against my sense of symmetry and order. I guess I’m not such a wonky person (although I know a lot of you out there would disagree).

My favorite color-changing thread went on the sewing machine and I had this thing quilted in no time.

And Jax says,
i need attention!
“Stop the wonky quilting and pet the wonky cat!”
(He was really asleep this way – half curled up and half stretched out.)

It’s Twins!

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

My friends are having twins! I used one Moda Jelly Roll to make these two cute quilts.
Twins - Girl

Chelsea purposely hung her nose over this one:
Twins - Boy

The fabric line is called Pampered Pooch. There are cute little bones and dogs in the print:

Flower quilting

For quilting, I put stars in the squares of one quilt, and flowers in the squares of the other. It’s easier to see the quilting on the backing:

The pattern came from this book (again):

Congratulations Stan and Sherri!

Mod Sampler Quilt-Along Progress

Friday, May 1st, 2009

I am just loving how these blocks turned out! Here they all are pinned up to the blanket:

Now I need to get sashing and backing fabric, but I have absolutely no time to go to the fabric shop. Not for 4 days at least. Ack!!! I don’t think I can stand to NOT sew.

Then I began looking at the pile of scraps from Rima’s quilt:
Stack of scraps

I THINK I can squeeze out a baby quilt from this stuff. Couldn’t I? So…right after I said I only work on one quilt at a time, now I’m working on two at once. ha! Here’s an extreme close-up of one block:

Now when I finally get to the fabric shop, I’ll need backing for this quilt, too. Yay!!

S’mores Quilt

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

My first jelly roll quilt! My son is holding it again, with his hair combed this time. I swear quilts attract cats:

It uses the S’mores fabric line from Moda. I got the pattern from this book by Pam and Nicki Lintott:

Some close-ups:

I tried to quilt some swirls in amongst the meandering:

This was also the first time I had to piece the backing. Dang! I could have sworn I bought enough fabric. So much for the engineering degree – I can’t even do basic math anymore!

And Jax says,

“Mmmm, I like this one, too…”

Portuguese Tiles Quilt

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

My daughter wanted this one before I was even done the the quilt top:

Quilt - Portuguese Tiles

The pattern came from M’Liss Rae Hawley’s Phenomenal Fat Quarter Quilts:

I used a bunch of fat quarters I had in my stash, that I had obtained from Ebay. Browsing through Ebay, I found something new since I had stopped quilting – Moda Jelly Rolls! Here’s a sneak peak at my next project:

While working on the Portuguese Tiles quilt, I covered it and my sewing machine with an old sheet to keep the cats off. It didn’t work:

Get off that, Mittens and Jax!

Brownies Layout

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Chelsea has finished her first year of Brownies! They celebrated at the troop leader’s house, and had a pool party. Time for another Becky Higgins sketch from her second fabulous book:

You know, I had forgotten how much fun scrapbooking is. And it is so much quicker and easier with a sketch in front of you. I chose one from the 6-7 photos section, and ta daaaaa:

More To Adore 1
More To Adore 2

Papers: More To Adore level 2 paper pack (Close To My Heart)
Other: Die cuts, Sunshine alphabet (QuicKutz)

And Kit tells my husband, “You work, I’ll nap behind your monitor.”

Maunawili Falls Layout

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

I finally had some time to sit down and do something creative! The photos I took of my last hike were calling out to me. I reached for the classic idea book:

Who doesn’t love Becky Higgins? Layouts ordered by number of photos, with a sketch and several samples. Brilliant! Her clean and simple style is just perfect for me. So I choose a layout designed for 10+ photos, then started to look for paper.

The Rustic Trail paper pack was a perfect match for the photos, but when I went to look for a font to stamp the title, I only found stuff that looked….cute. Really cute, but really not a match for this layout! Then I remembered my The Angel Company stamps I just bought from Jen. The Stipple-bet was perfect!

Falls 1

Falls 2

Stamp sets: Stipple-bet (The Angel Company)
Inks: Cocoa (Close To My Heart)
Papers: Rustic Trails level 2 paper pack (Close To My Heart)
Other: Edge Distresser (Close To My Heart)

You can’t tell from the photo, but I distressed the edges of the cardstock mats. Gives it more of that “rustic” look.

And Jax says, “I’m watching you…”

Although this looks like a simple card, it holds a little surprise:

To Love More 01

All items from Close To My Heart:
Stamp Sets: To Love More, Curly Greetings
Inks: Sweet Leaf, Pink Carnation
Papers: Sweet Leaf, White Daisy, White Daisy Textured cardstock

You can take the front image off the card:

Bookmark Card 01

Notice how I stamped the same thing underneath! You can stamp something else to make it more interesting. There is a corner cut on the front of the card. The matted image is held on to the card with a small envelope corner:

Bookmark Card 02

I just cut this corner from the end of a junkmail envelope, and glued it to the back of the matted image:

Bookmark Card 03

Now you can slip it over the corner of a book page…

…and use it as a bookmark!

Bookmark Card 05

Ha ha! Because it is so easy to make, you can crank out a ton of these!! Use your imagination to cut out different shapes for the bookmark. I got this easy idea from Cards That Pop-Up, Flip & Slide.

This book has ideas that range from easy to quite elaborate, and it is one of my favorites when I want to make something different. But now I’m off to make some lunch. Leave comments…I love comments! Except for spam ones, now those I could do without.
