For Momoko

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

My mom-in-law is going to Japan this fall, and requested a quilt for a 6-year-old girl:

For Momoko

It would look so much nicer if it wasn’t a cloudy day. Four charm packs (5″ squares) of Birdie by Moda was used, along with Kona cotton White. Leftovers got used up on the back:

If you look closely, you can see the loopy quilting. I’m liking it better than stippling!

And Jax says,

“These are my favorite blocks…right here.”

Daisy Chain wall hanging

Monday, June 28th, 2010

This quilt was planned in my head for quite some time until I finally got to actually DO IT! It went way faster than I expected:

Fabric: Daisy Chain
Pattern: Quilt Interrupted by M’Liss Rae Hawley in her Phenomenal Fat Quarter Quilts book

Here’s a closeup:

I tried a new quilting stitch, making it look loopy. It shows up much better on the backing:

This one’s getting mounted on my wall soon.

And Jax says, “I fit in!” And Mittens says,

“Not!”

Getting Wonky

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Why is it that when I get my camera out, the sun goes away? ack. At least I have a tall son that is willing to hold up my quilts.

Wonky Squares

This quilt was inspired by Karla Alexander’s book, Stack A New Deck. I had wanted to try it for a long time now, but the perfect fabric eluded me. That is, until I saw Oz by Sanae for Moda Fabrics.

I just stacked a few layers of a Moda layer cake (10″ squares) and started cutting. It totally went against my sense of symmetry and order. I guess I’m not such a wonky person (although I know a lot of you out there would disagree).

My favorite color-changing thread went on the sewing machine and I had this thing quilted in no time.

And Jax says,
i need attention!
“Stop the wonky quilting and pet the wonky cat!”
(He was really asleep this way – half curled up and half stretched out.)

Spinners Baby Quilt

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Another cloudy day to take pictures :(

This was made using the leftover layer cake squares from the Sparklers 2 quilt. Instead of white for the background, I used a soft yellow.

Spinners

The pattern is from the “Piece of Pie” quilt book from Pie Plate Patterns. The fabric is Fresh by Deb Strain for Moda.

Here’s the close-up with the backing and binding:

I tried to get creative again with the quilting. That was fun! Having that quilting frame sure helps.

Jax approved this quilt long before I was done with it. Jax says,
back to sleep now?
“Will you let me go back to sleep now?”

Sparklers 2 Quilt

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

I was waiting for a sunny day to take this picture, but it never came. :( Thanks to the magic of Picnik on Flickr, I could still get decent color:

Sparklers 2

The pattern is Sparklers 2 from the Layer Cake Recipe Book by Cozy Quilt Designs. The fabric is Fresh by Deb Strain for Moda. I was lucky enough to get a layer cake of the entire fabric line on Ebay for cheap. It didn’t use the entire layer cake, so I had a bunch of extra fabric.

I got the backing and binding on sale from my favorite online fabric shop, The Fabric Shack:

Binding and Backing

I tried something new with the quilting, and I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. But I like it! I did not mark the quilt before I started – it was all done “freehand” or “freemotion” or whatever you want to call it.

Hope you had a happy Mother’s Day!

And Jax says,
nap time
“You don’t have to sew on the binding now…it’s my nap time.”

Disappearing 9-Patch Quilt

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I had seen several quilts called “Disappearing 9-Patch”. Looked easy, so here I go! Step 1, get 4 charm packs (40 – 5″ squares). This fabric line is called Panache from Moda:
Step 1: get charm packs

Step 2, sew them together into big 9-patch blocks:
Step 2: sew 9-patch

Step 3, cut into quarters:
Step 3: Cut into 4 pieces

Step 4, rotate a couple of pieces around:
Step 4: Rotate pieces

Step 5, sew them back together:
Step 5: sew back together

Add sashing and borders, and TADAAAA:

I had a few extra charm squares, so I added them to the back:

Here’s the close-up:

And I used my favorite color changing thread to quilt the layers together. This thread changes from cream to brown and back. Look closely and you’ll see it, or you can click on the picture and view the LARGE size on Flickr’s site:

And Kit says,
Meow
“Mmmm…Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal. A fine drink!”

Not even a placemat

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

I had tiny leftover pieces from this tablerunner, so one night while watching TV I just stiched them together:

Not even a placemat

I used leftover batting and leftover backing. I even found some leftover binding from this quilt. It was just quilted by stitching in the ditch:
Not even a placemat - back

It only measures 8″ x 10″. So quick, and so tiny! I have no clue what to do with it. Any suggestions?

And Mittens says,

“It’s not even big enough to be my blanket.”

It’s Twins!

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

My friends are having twins! I used one Moda Jelly Roll to make these two cute quilts.
Twins - Girl

Chelsea purposely hung her nose over this one:
Twins - Boy

The fabric line is called Pampered Pooch. There are cute little bones and dogs in the print:

Flower quilting

For quilting, I put stars in the squares of one quilt, and flowers in the squares of the other. It’s easier to see the quilting on the backing:

The pattern came from this book (again):

Congratulations Stan and Sherri!

Table Runner – Patisserie

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I saw this pattern on the Moda Bakeshop website, and I remembered about this one lone charm pack I had. It was the Patisserie fabric line, and it was perfect! I finished in one weekend:

I know I have one jelly roll of this fabric line around somewhere…

…and I might even have a layer cake too. Hmm….
